Angora Goat History

Search Our Site

Angora goats originated from Asia Minor. Down the centuries they settled into a Turkish area called Ankara from which the name angora was originated.

In the 1800’s the importation of purebred angora’s to South Africa started and hence this is where the genetics for future global populations began.

South Africa is the global hub for genetics and the production of mohair products with many mills in Port Elizabeth.

Angora’s were introduced to New Zealand in 1867 as a breeding animal by animal collectors. In the 1970’s we introduced more genetics and have built up our gene pool with the use of ferals.

New Zealand now has a well domesticated angora goat that is a joy to farm.

New Zealand has farmed angora’s since and has a well, respected industry that produces top quality mohair and that is well recognised overseas.

Out of interest goats are even mentioned in the bible with the mention of fibre from the goat. It mentions how the tabernacle was made partly of goat hair which is now known as mohair.

“Make a cover for the tent out of eleven pieces of cloth made out of

goats hair” Exodus 26:8

Captain Cook was the first European to bring goats to New Zealand .
