Foot Health

Keeping goats feet in top order is essential to overall animal health.

This is due to the fact that goats need to move to eat and keeps their gastro system functioning.

Limping or injury to the foot needs fast action . This can lead to a goat unable to walk and eat.

Regular management can avoid foot problems in the future.

Keeping feet well trimmed helps.

To trim, follow the edge of the hoof wall and trim so its even on both sides. Ensure the sole of the foot is also even and flat.

Overgrown feet can lead to consistent foot problems like foot scald and foot rot.

While trimming feet look for signs of infection underneath and in the upper part between the hoof. Also look for redness and foreign matter that may need to be removed.

Anything that is bad or decayed looking needs to be removed by trimming. Spray with an antiseptic spray eg: medicated iodine all over the foot and allow to dry. Several applications may be required depending on nature of foot problem. If very serious you must consult a vet.

Allowing goats to get out of the wet pasture will reduce foot problems. Having items such as old electrical cable drum allow goats to sit, stand and climb and to keep feet out of the wet. These are free to you from your local electricity supplier.
