Good Goat Health

Search Our Site

  1. Ensure animals have adequate shelter where there is no leaks or draughts
  2. Let goats display natural behaviour as this reduces stress and boredom Ideas like things to jump on like old stumps or cable drums
  3. Always have a mineral block placed accessibly in the paddock as goats have a high mineral need
  4. Variety of feed is needed as goats are browsers and like humans need variety ie hay ,tree fodder, pellets.
  5. Clean water is essential for goats as they will drink a lot especially in summer ensure water troughs allow for maximum consumption for the herd.
  6. Regular maintenance is the key to good goat health. Check daily for ill thrift, limping, scouring.  Regular worming, vaccinating and condition scoring will detect any issues as well as daily checks.
  7. Regular paddock rotation ie moving goats to fresh paddocks  so that some paddocks are rested to avoid  heavily soiled paddocks or lacking feed.
  8. Get annual soil tests done  to see what your pasture is lacking and to see what needs to be added.
  9. Educate yourself on the needs of your goats in terms of overall health
  10. Spend time with your goats so that you have a good bond that ensures easy handling and observation of when something is not right with your goat.
