Internal Parasites

Search Our Site

Goats like all livestock can be affected by internal parasites.

Reasons for a build - up could be due to a lack of paddock rotation and good management of animals.

A build - up of parasites then increases and becomes a burden to the animal.

Signs of a possible parasite burden are scouring-but not always, isolation, lethargy and lack of food intake.

A worm burden needs immediate attention otherwise it can lead to unnecessary suffering for the animal.

Prevention is better than cure so the best way to avoid parasite/worm burden is to ensure regular paddock rotation and checking the animal’s eating habits.

If something is not looking right check it out early. If there are signs of a worm burden the goat may need to be drenched.

Ensure you drench your goat at 1.5 times the recommended dose. Dosage is based on weight. (Refer to directions on the drench product).

Use a drench gun or syringe to draw up required amount. Place it inside the cheek of the goat while tilting the head back slightly and administer drench slowly, as goat needs to swallow all drench for it to be effective.

Ensure you use an effective drench e.g. a triple drench. You must seek veterinary advice if you are unsure before use.

Faecal egg count tests can be helpful to determine the level of worm burden. You may also need to test to see what species of parasites you have to address and determine the type of drench you use.

Always seek veterinary advice for tests , drench use or if you are unsure about the state of your animal.
